Buckfast Abbey 2 June 2013 - Caroline

It was a beautiful sunny day when we met at Plympton. Julie, Mike, Bryan, Andy E, George, and myself. Julie and George had already done a 70 miler on Saturday so it was great that they could join my ride.
We picked up Andy P half way up the hill and made our way along the track to tea stop at Route 38. We were joined there by Les and Larry. After what I felt was a reasonable break poor George was still waiting for his toast! He was happy for us to go on and said he would catch us up. Larry who was still eating beans on toast said the same.
We continued on turning left at the Banana Frog garage up Shute Lane, then right down the hill past Glazebrook House to South Brent. This is where George caught us up, coming a slightly different route. We continued on up the short but nasty hill out of South Brent and on the well trodden route to Buckfast Abbey via Harbertonford and Dean Prior.
We settled for a couple of benches in the grounds for lunch where we approached by one of the elderly monks from the Abbey who seemed rather interested in the variety of bikes and wanted to know where we had cycled from. He was apparently a cyclist himself. Les and Larry met us there. This was Les' first time out in quite a while so was taking it steady.
A few of the group managed to beat the coach party at the restaurant for a cup of tea, the ones that didn't decided to go to The Steam Railway where the others joined us later.
The route home was just the reverse of the route there....somewhat hillier but a pleasant ride. Just over 40 miles I think.
