There
were 6 of us at Ivybridge P and R for a trip to the seaside. I was joined by George, Bryan, Graham B, Julie and eventually Yolande. It was pleasantly warm, a bit overcast with a strongish east wind. Bryan decided to take the car to Moreleigh so he could cycle the more distant and interesting bit. Our route took us through Avonwick and Diptford to Moreleigh where we picnicked in the playground by the village hall. The place was being prepared for a sports day and dog show that afternoon, but more of that later. The ridge road and descent into Slapton is a joy. Lunch on the beach. Only Yolande toyed with the idea of a swim, but never fully achieved it. A solitary swimmer transpired to be the lifeguard, complete with wet suit. After a windy lunch we were blown along to Torcross and up the valley to Stokenham. We took a different route back to Moreleigh to find the village hall area transformed. We arrived just as the 'village princess' was being crowned. The extremely friendly locals encouraged us to stay and join in the sports. We did.
Yolande came a creditable third in the ladies running race and even gained a certificate. Graham and George didn't fare so well in the men's race. The highlight though was definitely the three legged race. It was a strong field. Yolande and Jean were doing well until they became completely unco-ordinated and nearly collasped in a heap. Graham and Julie struggled to get a rhythm going but resolutely completed the course. Photos of the event can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/64194910@N03/sets/72157634754054524/, in particular there's one of Bryan with us 3 leggers in the distance. Sadly George's attempt at a photographic record resulted only in 4 photos of grass!
Oh yes and the cycling. We reluctantly left before the dog show and travelled via Gara Bridge, California Cross and Bittaford back to Ivybridge. 40 miles and over 1000m climbing. A cycle ride with a difference!
