I felt that two successful 100km audaxes completed in one month by group members
should not go unrecorded.
On June 1st George, Julie, Phil and myself completed a ride from Uffculme, near
Cullompton, to the north coast and back. The ride up was protected by high
hedges; protected from the wind and protected from the views. We ate our picnic
lunch on a blustery quay at Watchet, a delightful spot, and then started looking
for a suitable cafe. However realising we were in danger of missing the time
deadline at Blue Anchor, we set off at a pace along the coast road straight into
a raging head wind, we could hardly move. The southerly route back from Blue
Anchor was more attractive with splendid views and we enjoyed a second tea stop
at Bishops Lydeard station. In all 106km and 1540m of cumulative ascent. So
quite hilly! We were the last to finish, but then some others
abandoned.
The second ride on June
30th was the Devon
Delight, an old favourite. Again 4 of us, George, Graham B, Yolande and myself.
Not strictly an Audax but the same route, the 20th anniversary ride with lots of freebies.
This took us over the new cycle bridge at Newton Abbot out to Dawlish, an
easterly circumnavigation of Exeter and then north to Clyst Honiton and Stoke
Canon for lunch with an abundance of luscious cakes. Just two major climbs but
lots of lovely sunshine and not too hot, in fact perfect for cycling. The last
section along the Teign valley was particularly beautiful; pity it's not a cycle
path. The cream tea at the finish was well appreciated. 110km on the clock and
1108m of cumulative ascent.
