After a couple of Sundays when the weather was too poor to coax many of us out onto the roads, it was great to have a Sunday with bright sunshine all day. The route was essentially the same as the Tamar 100 with the difference that we cut out the last long hill from Newbridge to Amytree by heading along the A388 and taking a R at the Amytree sign. To be honest I think we were all pretty tired at the end of the day and Trevor was suffering all day with a really bad chest cold. Not his usual self at all.
The ride was well supported: Graham Black, Graham Reed, Dave Newman and son-in-law, Mike Willacy, John O'Rourke, Yolande and Trevor Bradshaw. We had expected to meet John at the Hatt roundabout but the A388 was closed when we got there. The Cornish Guardian carried the following story:
"A MOTORCYCLIST and his pillion passenger are currently in intensive care with "life-changing" injuries following a collision with a Land Rover near the village of Hatt yesterday morning.
The A388 north of the Hatt roundabout in South East Cornwall was closed for nearly ten hours as police carried out their investigations."
Eventually we met up with John and Dave Newman at the farm shop on the Upton Cross road. Because of the accident the lanes were busier than usual on the way there. Mike and Dave left us at that point and the rest of us carried on to Launceston, where we had lunch in the castle grounds.
The pace was quite fast overall and John was suffering by the time he got to Leburnick and left us shortly afterwards to "bimble" that last 5 miles to Callington at his leisure.
At five in the afternoon the lanes were still busy with traffic and we were held up on the hill leading to Hatt. We got to the bridge at 6:00 pm with about 66 miles on the clock.
