Graham B, Yolande and Larry joined me at the Tamar Bridge on a chilly, but
potentially glorious, morning. Graham R arrived to say hello but had to visit his Mum.
Trevor and Graham J were both in N Devon for the weekend.
Usual route up to Callington via Hatt, Amy Tree and St.Germans Road. Then along
the B road through Bray Shop and Coads Green to the coffee stop at Plusha. It was
about 1130. When we arrived but warm enough to sit outside. We went via
Trevadlock through the lanes to Bathgate where we decided that we had the time
and energy to explore the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor which meant a four and a
half mile detour. It was quite steep ( one chevron) and long but the views and
atmosphere were superb. At the end of the metal road we stopped to admire the
view when a shire horse seemed to appear from nowhere. Yolande swiftly produced
an apple which he took obligingly and then proceeded to lick her Brooks saddle! As
we could see from the map there was no recognizable path to get us to Henwood
and then Minions so we had to retrace our steps. Without doubt this was an
unnecessary hill, but we are a touring club!
From Bathgate it was onto South Hill where we saw a wonderful reconditioned
Morgan outside a workshop where we stopped to talk to the owner. Larry impressed
him with his knowledge of engines e.t.c. We parted company and were soon on the
challenging road to Liskeard through Berrio Bridge , Upton Cross and to Tokenbury
Corner (Larry wasn’t blown across the road this time!) arriving at Weatherspoons just
before 3pm. The return journey through Pengover Green, Doddycross, Tilland and
Tideford Cross was pleasant but uneventful. At Blunts we voted on the ‘private road’
to Pillaton Mill with it’s steep hill up to the nursery. Then, as usual, back through Hatt
to Saltash. 55 miles on the clock and didn’t I know it! I believe each of us enjoyed a
pleasant day out.
