Tamar Bridge to Horsebridge & Tavistock 21/4/19 Larry Clarke

What a pleasant surprise to see John waiting at the bridge, having cycled all the way from Tavistock.
Soon we were joined by Graham B & Dave. Off we went out of Saltash on New road & soon found
ourselves going through Hatt at a very fast speed, as was mentioned later on. Now on the country
lanes proper we soon found the hills to slow the pace down to what you could call touring speed.
Then it was through Pillaton descending all the time to follow the river Lynher up stream to cross
Clapper bridge. Not in full flood like it was of late. Still on narrow lanes we turned right & headed
through a wooded area alongside the Lynher, soon crossing the only ford on the ride. Here Graham
decided to ride over the raised walkers route & nearly come a cropper. I don't think he will be
doing that again in a hurry. Now it felt like we were climbing all the way to Pensilva cafe. On
arrival it was good to see them busy on a bank holiday. I think Dave enjoyed the trip up looking at
the perspiration on his face. He always enjoys a good workout.
Soon we were back in the saddle & now descending to Rilla Mill, to cross the Lynher again & after
a short climb turned right. Now heading towards Linkinhorne in quiet narrow country lanes. After
climbing away from Linkinhorne we soon descended & passed through Bray Shop, crossed the
main road between Callington & Launceston. Then pedaled our way towards Horsebridge on a
lovely descent. Just before the bridge we spied young David of Liskeard CTC fame, sunning himself
against a wooden gateway. So after a brief spell of chat we bade farewell & crossed the Tamar
river, & started the long climb up to Chipshop. Here we stopped in the newly set up farm shop,
complete with parasols. This was much appreciated due to the un-seasonally warm weather.
Unfortunately drinks were only served in paper cups.
Soon on our way we descended to the hamlet of Millhill, & went alongside the river Lumburn.
Then went over the bridge & climbed to Tavistock. Here we bade farewell to John, then continued

onto Drakes trail. After some time we left the trail & continued on road to Crapstone. Then re-
joined the trail to come off & go pass the Royal Marines Barracks at Bickleigh. Then on to

Crownhill, St Budeaux. Here Graham B left Dave & myself. Dave left just before I turned into
Taylor Road. Yes, 52 miles on the computer & I new it.
