Julie was off in Totnes with a faithful few in admirable support of Kevin Presland, the rest of the Plymouth Section being left to fend for ourselves. Sue, Anna and Bryan made private arrangements to meet at Plymco to do their own ride
I didn't know for sure until Saturday evening whether my alternative, car-assisted ride to Holsworthy had any life in it. George - under the pernicious influence of tea, no doubt - vaguely thought he might join me and Andy Easton at Brentor at 10.15 am.
Andy was 15 minutes late at my place, and we left Brent Tor at 10.30 am. No sign of George - what happened we will no doubt learn later.
Andy and I followed the designated alternative route, which involved five substantial climbs (44 back-breaking miles in total). The weather was in our favour and we enjoyed the current, warm release from the vice-like grip of arctic cold, which has seemed to be the pattern for the last few months.
So, once again, it was another Plymouth CTC weekend with everyone doing as they pleased and - this is the point - enjoying it to the full!
